  • Grace Marchant Garden, paul (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
I'm proud to mention that Grace was my great aunt and every time I get to San Francisco I walk the steps in amazement at what she accomplished. I live near Seattle so it's only every 20 years or so I get to enjoy her handy work. Being there just a month ago (May 2009), I'm glad to see that the neighboirhood still cares for the gardens.

The empty lot was the former site of a church. The final occupant was a Baptist congregation. An arsonist burned the building down in 1993. More info here: http://www.baptistchurchsf.org/ourhistory.html

Adaptive re-use by MBH Architects. The company that printed the posters and tee shirts for the Winterland in the 60's (yes, that legendary psychedelic stuff) was located here. Janis Joplin tagged one of the walls in the original structure.

Eddie's Cafe at the corner of Fulton & Divisadero in San Francisco is the real thing. I know because I live one block away!
  • San Francisco Public Library, SF Resident (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
Possibly the least friendly and least inviting public building on the planet! Libraries should encourage people to come in an browse, to stop and read, to tuck away and put your nose in a book. This place herds any visitor down and through a cattle gate then you have to navigate your way up to the stacks, which are loud and not inviting. Just another SF masterpiece.
