Looks like these cars are left standing on a track that led to Portero Hill tunnel. That trackage was used by freight trains until 60s or 70s. How did passenger cars end up there I have no idea.

I was too young to patronize this place in the 1960's, but I recall my parents regaling of the festive and jovial atmosphere at this place during their times there. Part of the fun was that there was only common seating and no booths, so strangers, from all over the world, sat shoulder-to-shoulder with each other. A fun time chatting away for all.

I recall hearing many radio commercials of dances/concerts being held here in the psychedelic 1960's. Music groups such as Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, and many others performed here.

Actually, it was a freeway. It ended at Franklin and Golden Gate, and there was an onramp at Gough and Turk. This part was demolished in the early 1990s, after it had been closed due to structural instability caused by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
